The Tracks We Leave

from The Tracks We Leave by Tempest

/

lyrics

Into the hills on the longest day
The mountain breeze blows years away
We range like elk through grass and moss
And many a shining stream to cross

We make the cabin by nightfall
And stoke the stoves and light them all
As shadow covers the mountainside
The first of them against soft night

We’ll be known forever by the tracks we leave
We know your heart by the life you weave
When the wind picks up, who can hang on
What act will it all depend upon

We wash and drink from a mountain spring
As cold and fresh as steel can ring
And on green slopes not a soul for miles
Not hawk, or wolf, no elk or child

We rest together near Black Pond
By Fox’s house where the bones are found
We talk of tales from a distant day
The things the old ones used to say

They brought us here and we owe them that
And left much more than an old straw hat
The hunter’s faces fade away
But the joys of our adventures stay

THE TRACKS WE LEAVE (Sorbye/Reynolds)
Into the mountains near Geilo, Norway -- a trip to Jegerstølen, inspired this reverie. As in the Dakota Sioux proverb -- the story of your life is told by the tracks you leave. The melody has ancient Scandinavian roots.
